The Orpheum Theatre chain first built the theatre in 1922 and operated until about 1950. Television, it seems, was taking the place of the theatre as families stayed home more and more. The theatre avoided the wrecking ball in 1959, when Mrs Ella M. Morris purchased the building. After remodeling, the theatre re-opened as the Morris Civic Auditorium. It closed again in 1998 to under-go a $17M rennovation and restoration project. In 2000, the property re-opened with 2,500 seats as the Morris Performing Arts Center
